Yes, of course he was - just like many other great pianists such as Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Vladimir Horowitz, Heinrich and Stanislav Neuhaus, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Tatiana Nikolayeva, Lev Oborin, Vera Gornostaeva, Valentina Lisitsa (and many many others). In this context it's very important to not confuse art with politics and the current war tragedies.

@@pianocareer Can I ask a question? Is rotation applicable to Bach's Prelude in C minor BWV 999? Will it help me play without tension? I really am struggling with playing tension-free as I have been with teachers who taught me finger isolation technique before and for the most part I was just self taught except for a couple of teachers who I said taught me finger isolation technique based piano playing.

@@jojoestoy To my knowledge, 'rotation' is a term mainly used by the followers of the Taubman method. In the Russian system, it is either not used at all, or it has a different meaning. I prefer the terms 'wrist flexibility', 'wrist relaxation' and 'wrist anticipation'. You also need to be aware that wrist technique is an inseparable part of whole-arm action, and cannot be used (or learned) on its own. Simply put - having a flexible wrist (or 'rotating' it) will not help much if your posture is wrong, if you're sitting too close to the instrument (or too low), if you're not channeling weight from the back, or if your arms are tensed and you're using the 'finger-only' technique. In the professional method I teach, ergonomic wrist technique is taught from day one, in a progressive manner - together with the fundamental non-legato weighted key attack (which is the best way to learn whole-arm action). As our students progress through the Lessons of our Beginner Course, they gradually incorporate more and more wrist movements into their playing (such as horizontal navigation, relaxation during weight transfer etc.). Simply 'rotating' your wrist in playing a late beginner piece (without re-building your technique correctly) will not accomplish anything. So my recommendation is to join PCA - and learn how to play correctly, in a step-by-step manner, not skipping any steps (technique, sound production, relaxation, aural training, expressive skills etc.) 😊. There might be teachers who specialize in that. Still, whole-arm action and weighted playing (the professional technique I teach in all my tutorials) is healthy, ergonomic and tension/pain free. If you suffer from arthritis, it makes sense to use a natural, fluid and comfortable technique that does not cause EXTRA issues (as the old-school 'finger' technique tends to do). Supplementing your practice with a daily exercise regimen can also be helpful (my mother has suffered from arthritis for the last 20+ years, and exercise helps her a LOT to stay flexible and manage pain). Diet plays a big role too. Good luck, I hope you find a solution that works for you! 😉

I don't have a tutorial focused on this piece yet - but I hope to get to it one day 😊 Generally speaking, when we feel stuck in our practice, we need to return to the basics: hands separately, very slowly first, non-legato, using the 'magnifying glass' method (where we isolate each little difficulty and bring it to perfection before integrating it into a bigger structure). And, of course, Arrau doesn't deserve anything less. Still, I can answer your other question shortly: Indeed, in many cases it is enough to use the force of gravity alone for depressing a key. This is actually what we do during the fundamental non-legato key attack (which is the basic exercise for learning whole-arm action). In this case, our approximate sound intensity is mezzo-forte (but this also depends on the individual weight of our arm). However, often we need to produce a more powerful and resonant sound. Some people (especially tall men with heavy bones and arms) don't need to 'press' much into the keys in such cases. Others, however (for example light-boned women like me) need extra energy to produce the same result (which we take from the back and shoulder muscles, not from the weak fingers). The quality/character of the sound is another thing to consider: if we 'drop' the arm, this results in a sharp sound. If this is our purpose, no problem. However, most often we need to create a beautiful, velvety, deep and resonant tone. This requires less 'descent velocity' for a gradual, 'sinking' key attack. Energy flow, gel, dough etc. - all of these are just metaphors that help us to understand the needed sensations 😊. You only need one of them to 'click' for you - so it's ok if 'energy flow' doesn't work. You could also imagine that a powerful stream of water flows from your back through your arms and into the keys - while the keyboard itself is a soft pillow into which you can 'sink' your entire weight 😉.
